Our definition of sustainability
Sustainability is more than just a trend for us and is central to our focus. This was already clear when Rotho was founded in 1889 with the construction of a hydroelectric power plant to generate energy. Over 135 years later, we still understand that we need to make a contribution to climate protection. For this reason, we use over 98% green electricity and produce part of our own electricity requirements using solar panels on our company roofs. For us, economic success and ecological responsibility are inextricably linked.
On our way to a sustainable future, we at Rotho have introduced the “Zero Waste Vision”. We continue to develop our understanding of sustainability every year in order to immediately and significantly reduce emissions. One of our most important goals: To achieve the net zero standard of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) by 2050.

Towards net zero emissions
Our short-term and long-term science-based targets for reducing CO₂ have been recognized by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This ensures that our measures make a significant contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and effectively counteracting climate change. SBTi has the ambitious goal of limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels. We are committed to bringing our footprint to net zero by 2050. In addition, we are committed to reducing Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions (including operational facilities, company vehicles, purchased electricity, heating, and cooling) by 50.4% and Scope 3 emissions (including raw materials, logistics, and disposal of sold products) by 30% by 2032.
